What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that may significantly impact a person’s life. Its symptoms can cause people to think, feel and behave significantly differently from what is considered normal. Schizophrenia affects about twenty-four million (24) people worldwide, or 1 in 300 people (0.32%) It usually starts during late adolescence and not as common as other mental disorders. Schizophrenia, can be very disabling, but recovery is possible with time treatment, and support.

What Causes Schizophrenia?
The cause of Schizophrenia is not fully understood, but it is thought to be genetic and environmental factors. Schizophrenia runs in families, so there is a genetic component. However, environmental factors such as stress or exposure to certain viruses may also play a role.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

  • Delusions (persistence false beliefs)
